It’s that time of year again when my thoughts turn to Lyon and one of the most spectacular festivals I have ever visited – The Festival of Lights or Fêtes des Lumières, taking place this year from 5th – 8th December 2014.
The entire city becomes involves and it spreads out over four days of pure magic. It’s innovative, intriguing and startling – and of course – it’s all laid on for you free of charge – you wander around a route and marvel at the spectacle.
This is the type of contemporary, modern festival that the French do so well – when they let their imagination take flight and innovation triumphs. Who knows what this year will bring! More than 70 light installations are promised – either stand alone or projected onto buildings.
Don’t bother taking dinner in your hotel or a restaurant either – graze from the enticing street stalls as you follow the lighting trail … for this is the gourmet city of France where the chefs also come out to play for this festival!
A little tip – the weekend does tend to get crowded so visit on the Thursday for a slightly less congested city! I went in 2012 and can’t wait to go back again.
Here’s a teaser from last year:
